 For more than 2,000 years, Chinese herbalists have used Astragalus for various conditions, although, European botanists didn't write about its medicinal qualities until the late 1700's. The plant is known as Milkvetch and Yellow Leader (Huang Qi ) in Chinese Medicine. This name refers to both the color of the interior root and the plant’s prestige among Chinese medicine. Astragalus is still one of the fifty fundamental herbs used in Chinese Medicine.

The roots of Astragalus are not harvested until the plant has reached four years in age. This makes for larger, more potent roots. 

The compounds in the plant have been found to have the following actions - Adaptogen, antibacterial, antiviral, diuretic, immune-stimulant,  & vasodilator.

Companion plants often mixed with Astragalus include reishi ( fungi), goldenseal, echinacea and ginseng.
