Baptisia australis, also known as blue wild indigo or blue false indigo, is a flowering plant/herb in the family Fabaceae. It is native to central and eastern North America. Blue Wild Indigo may reach a height of 3-4 feet with grey-green leaves arranged alternately. Flowers appear in early/mid summer that vary in color from light blue to deep violet. Wild Indigo is a fantastic addition to your flower garden or herb gardening.

Germinating Blue Wild Indigo Seeds can be difficult. Below is basic information to help you get started although we suggest studying scarification and stratification methods, by reading as much as possible on the subject and how it applies to your specific seeds.

"Tame the Spirit" Herbs and native seeds are always organic, Wild Harvested or Farm Grown. Always unprocessed with no additives or preservatives. We keep it " Wild" so you can keep it Healthy!

Nature sometimes increases the odds of organic seeds germinating at just the right time by requiring multiple conditions be met. Blue Wild Indigo seeds need a 60-90 day period of cold stratification ( as well as scarification). Place your seeds in between two pieces of medium grit sand paper and lightly scar the seeds. When completed, place the seeds in a plastic bag with damp peat moss in the refrigerator for 60-90 days. After this period you can sow your seeds directly on top of your growing medium covered with a white sheet or burlap to allow for sun penetration. Keep the seeds moist during this period as well as after they germinate into seedlings. Blue Wild Indigo grows best in lime-free, well-drained stony soil in full sun to part shade.

Blue Wild Indigo is commonly used as an herb both for the dye that can be made and the medicinal properties of the roots.
