The common buckthorn is native to Europe and Asia. The Buckthorn Tree has been naturalized in North America, and grows wild in the U.S. Cascara Sagrada ( Rhamnus purshiana ) is closely related to Buckthorn and the two trees have similar compounds and uses.

Organic Buckthorn bark contains active compounds such as anthranoids, glucofrangulin and frangulin. These compounds are formed via oxidation while the bark is drying. The bark should be cured for at least one year prior to using.
