This is the dried Raw Chicory root harvested wild on the Tame the Spirit Farm. You can use as is or roast the root for a different flavor. Widely know as Chicory Coffee, a pleasing Coffee substitute, the root is also a potent herbal remedy. Chicory Tea, Tinctures and salves are common uses for this time tested herb.

Native to Europe, Organic Chicory is considered an invasive weed in North America with most commercial crops coming from farms in India. Chicory is a perennial growing up to four feet tall producing small, one inch, purple flowers. It can be seen blooming July through September and is commonly found along roadsides and waste areas.

As a coffee substitute Chicory Root is caffeine free and will make a very strong tasting brew. Our favorite way to use Chicory is half coffee and half Chicory, less if it is still a bit strong.

The active compounds in chicory are inulin, sesquiterpene lactones, vitamins, minerals, fat, mannitol and latex. Some of these compounds are considered anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and contain numerous antioxidants.
