Gymnema is a perennial vine native to India, Africa, and Australia. The organic Gymnema has been used as an herbel remedy for hundreds of years. Other common names include Australian cowplant, Periploca of the woods, and "gurmar" which means "sugar destroyer"

Gymnema herb leaves contain triterpenoid saponins, flavonols and gurmarin. The major active compounds are gymnemic acids, a class of triterpenoid saponins.
