High John Root is also known as bindweed and jalap root. The root has a pleasant, earthy odor, but is a strong laxative if taken internally.

One of the stories often told, John falls in love with the Devil's daughter. The Devil gives John a list of impossible tasks, clearing sixty acres of farm land in half a day, then harvesting corn in the other half of the day. The Devil's daughter supplies John with magical tools that allow these tasks to be completed, but she warns John that her father the Devil will kill John even if he performs the tasks on time. John and the Devil's daughter steal the Devil's horses and the Devil pursues them, but they escape by shape-shifting.
