Lactuca ludoviciana gets the name " Blue Lettuce" from the summer flowers which will mostly appear blue to purple although some plants will produce white or yellow flowers. Blue Lettuce is also known for a brownish white latex, possibly with a higher alkaloid content of lactucarium than other species of Wild Lettuce that produce the milky solid white latex.

Organic Wild Lettuce is also known as Louisiana Lettuce, bitter lettuce, blue lettuce, tall lettuce and opium lettuce. Native to North America Wild Lettuce contains a number of species producing a white Milky to grey Latex that is used by herbalists around the world. The Herbal Latex can be extracted from the plant and dried, or the leaves, which also contain the latex, can be dried and used in organic tea. Wild Lettuce contains a number of compounds and phytochemicals , most interestingly, lactucarium which seems to have been used for a wide variety of applications, by many cultures for thousands of years. Fresh Wild Lettuce Leaf can be bitter but is edible and can be used in Salads, on sandwiches or cooked as you would other green vegetables such as Spinach.
