The Evening Primrose Plant is a biennial growing from 1-5 feet tall. Flowering takes place in the evening hours from mid spring to late summer. The flowers open very quickly, so fast it can be clearly observed by the human eye. Hence the name "evening primrose."
Evening primrose was introduced to Europe in the 17th century. It was mainly an ornamental plant until around 100 years later it was introduced as a food source, a spice, and a medicinal herb. Unknown to most, by this time Native Americans had already been using the plant as a medicinal herb for hundreds of years.
All parts of the plant can be used as food, including the roots and seeds.For medicinal use the whole plant and the leaves were made into a tea by Native American tribes for a variety of ailments.
