Ironweed Seeds,

Vernonia gigantea,

A fantastic edition to your gardening hobby!

A member of the Sunflower family (Asteraceae), Ironweed averages 5 feet tall ( here in Eastern Kentucky we have seen wild plants reach over 9 feet!) The native plant has magnificent bright purple flowers that will bloom in late summer to early fall.

Growing your own organic plants from wildflower seed is the most economical and satisfying way to add native wildflowers to your home. Before you get started, one of the most important things to know about the seeds of wild plants is that many have built-in dormancy mechanisms that prevent the seed from germinating. In nature, this prevents a population of plants from germinating all at once, before killing frosts, or in times of drought. To propagate native plants, a gardener must break this dormancy before seed will grow.

STRATIFICATION NEEDED - To stratify your Wild Strawberry Seeds, place the container in the refrigerator in some moistened peat, sand or paper towel in a closed container or sealed plastic bag. Store seeds this way for 60-90 days. Keep moist/damp but not wet.
