Shavegrass herb or Horsetail Herb ( commonly referred to as both) is in a group of plants from the Equisetaceae family, a family that has been around for around 400 million years. Horsetail is seen as a “living fossil,” its existence goes back even before the dinosaurs. Horsetail used as an herbal remedy dates back to ancient Roman and Greek times where it was used for a variety of ailments. The plant is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, coagulant, demulcent, diuretic and astringent activity.

Horsetail is a herbaceous, perennial plant easily thriving and taking over in certain environments. Farmers in particular can find the plant invasive when it appears in food crop fields. It can be very hard to eradicate. It is an easy herb to grow although care should be taking to avoid unwanted spreading.
