Members of the genus are commonly called old man's beard, beard lichens, tree moss, or less common, air plants.

Organic Usnea has sometimes been used as an environmental bioindicator, because it tends to only grow in those regions where the air is clean. Lichens have been used in deodorant, toothpaste, salves, extracts, and perfumes.
