Yellowroot is the rhizome of the small, woody shrub with long, narrow stems. It can be found growing wild along stream banks and small rivers within the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky and surrounding areas. The roots are bright shades of glowing yellow, thus the common name of Yellowroot! Yellowroot was used by native peoples for thousands of years in the Appalachian region and was eventually introduced to European Settlers.
Yellow Root (Xanthorhiza simplicissima) is often compared, or even confused, with
Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis canadensis). Although they do share similar compounds and uses, they are a different plant species all together.
