Growing your own wild flowers or starting your own herb garden is a fun and rewarding
experience! Once you germinate, grow and harvest your Heal all (also known as self heal) you can use the herb for a number of medicinal purposes.
STRATIFICATION NEEDED: Seeds germinate after a 60-90 day period of cold, moist stratification. Place the seeds in the refrigerator in moistened peat, sand or paper towel in a closed container or sealed plastic bag. New seedling plants can be transplanted in early spring.
Known as both Heal All & Self Heal, this Wild Herb takes it name from centuries of use among Native Americans. The entire plant was used as a food source as well as a common herbal remedy for a variety of ailments.
Now a days, very few have heard of eating fresh Heal all, although the herbal community still understands the value of this bitter herb. It is used in making Heal All Tea, tincture, ointment or salve and is a time tested favorite wild herb. Prunella vulgaris is known by many names, the most popular being, Heal All, common self-heal, self heal, all-heal, heart of the earth, blue curls, hook-heal and carpenter's herb.
Heal all is usually found in open grass fields, waste areas and along woodland edges. It prefers moist soil and full sun to partial shade but Heal-All will grow just about anywhere, even in poor soil. .
Ranging in height from only a few inches to around one foot tall, Heal All flowers develop on a single terminating club like structure. Although small, the flowers are unique, creating both a purple top and bottom hood, many times the bottom hood is white.
Heal-All is a an easily recognizable member of the Mint Family (Lamiaceae). Keep your eyes peeled in nature and this gem isn't that hard to find!
