Wild Lettuce Root contains the same latex compound as found in the plant leaves, flowers, stems and stalks. It is used less commonly than the leaves and stems and should only be harvested from first year plants in the fall or second year plants in the spring when they are rich in these compounds.

Native to North America Wild Lettuce contains a number of species producing a white Milky Latex that is used by herbalists around the world. The Herbal Latex can be extracted from the plant and dried, or the roots, which also contain the latex, can be dried and used in herbal form as well. Wild Lettuce herb contains a number of compounds and phytochemicals , most interestingly, lactucarium which seems to have been used for a wide variety of applications, by many cultures for thousands of years. Undried, fresh Wild Lettuce Leaf and fresh young root are edible and can be used in Salads, on sandwiches or cooked as you would other green vegetables such as Spinach.
