Reishi is a polypore mushroom, sponge like, with a red-varnished kidney shaped cap that can have wide variations. Polypores lacks gills on the underside and release spores through fine tubes (pores). Polypore tubes are honey-comb-like structures, where the individual tubes have fused together. Polypores are also known as bracket fungi or conks.

Reishi contains compounds of triterpenes called ganoderic acids, which have a molecular structure similar to steroid hormones. It is also high in polysaccharides and other compounds often found in edible or medicinal fungi.
