Stoneroot grows very well in Limestone soil and is a common, native perennial, herbaceous plant in the Eastern U.S.

Both the Indians in North America and white settlers from Europe used stoneroot as an herbal remedy. The root contains resin, starch, mucilage and wax. The active alkaloid providing medicinal value appears to be a magnesium salt.
